Don't wait on it

In the midst of this price-cutting war between Amazon and Barnes & Noble, Plastic Logic has officially announced their QUE proReader will be delayed yet again. But sadly,  no date was mentioned for when the device will eventually come out. Although they did try to assure customers that they still have firm plans to release it in the near future.

It’s very likely the eReader price cutting has derailed the intentions of the company and they need some time to reconsider their own price strategy.

Those who pre-ordered the QUE have been sent an email saying that they have canceled all pre-orders, citing that this second delay will “result in a better product.”

Plastic Logic may have to do more than just deliver a better product in light of the recent price cuts. At a cost of $650 and $800, the QUE is priced extremely uncompetitively when compared to the $190 Kindle and the $150 Nook Lite. Such a high price will only appeal to business users and very dedicated readers.

The reality is that the release of the iPad has caused some major havoc in the eReader world. With the main players then reducing their prices lower and lower, many of the second tier players in the eReader market will have to bow out. This is unfortunate, but hopefully, it will cause the remaining companies to create more innovative products as well as making their devices more affordable.

Here’s the official email that was sent out.

We’ve been working hard to bring the world’s first product based on plastic electronics technology to market — and have decided that delaying the device a bit longer will result in a better product for you. With that in mind, we need to let you know that since your unit will not ship on June 24 as planned, our automated ordering system has automatically cancelled your order.

We do hope, however, that you will stay on our list of customers interested in knowing about our progress and details of our upcoming product shipment. If you’d like to remain on our list, please click here.

We continue to be excited about the potential that our thin, light and shatter-proof ProReader will offer to business users everywhere, and hope we can count you among the first to experience this groundbreaking device.

LOL “Delayed Second Time”. It has been delayed far more than that. It was “unveiled” in September 2008 and was supposed to be shipping before mid 2009, then Jan 2010, then April 2010 then June 2010 etc. The reason? They can't build the flex displays except at very low yield and very high cost.

Ah good catch. I’ve substituted “second” for “yet another.”

    Thanks Timble2!

Plastic Logic promoted their device on CES show but it was impossible to touch it… I think they have just prototypes and no real working product yet. I think that jetBook for $99 have more chances to compete with Kindle and Nook e-readers…

There has GOT to be a huge demand for a full screen – 1 letter sized page equal 1 screen – ereader!

Please, plastic logic, just give us a base model so i can start digging into my pdf library.
