Yea it's cheap...i guess

Hey all! Hope you had a great Independence day weekend!

Back to business as usual here ; )

First up, Sony has officially gotten into the price wars. Yaysers!

Just last week, Pocketbook joined in on the price-cutting fun by reducing prices on three of their eReaders and now, Sony has done the same with three of it’s own e-ink badboys.

Sony Reader Pocket Edition (was $169, now $149)
Sony Reader Touch Edition (was $199, now $169)
Sony Reader 3G Daily edition (was $349, now $299)

But as The Digital Reader points out, this may not be enough. The Pocket Edition is the SAME price as the Nook wifi, yet has only 512MB memory and isn’t wifi capable! It’s seriously overpriced for what it offers compared to the equally priced Nook. Same is true for their Daily edition. Three hundred dollars! That’s one hundred more than the Kindle or Nook 3G and the difference is barely anything other than it’s slightly larger screen.

I dunno Sony. You might want to rethink this one boys….just sayin.

I’m finding it hard to believe this is all Sony has up it’s sleeve. These price cuts just don’t seem aggressive enough given the competition. Sony cannot expect to realistically compete against a $149 Nook with their less capable Pocket Edition. They just can’t.

Hopefully, this is just the first step in a preparation for bigger news…maybe a new device? Pearl powered screen perhaps? Let’s hope.

I would like to toss in there that most E-books I own are between 1 – 2 mb in size depending on the length of the book. Even with the small ammount of memory in the PRS-300 (512 mb). It will hold more than 200 books at any given time. With the device full of books, it would take close to 4 years reading book a week to get through them all. I find novelty of memory in my Nook humorous since I load it full of books, but only use about 100 megabytes at a time of its available 2 gb. I honestly think these ebooks have way too much memory, less memory and lower price would be nice. I used to have a PRS-505 with 420 mb of memory and I never once filled it up unless I felt the need to toss on music and pictures. With the 2gb in my new Nook I have no idea what to do with it since I never load music on it (that is what my MP3 player is for).

It's funny because I think for $200 the 3G Daily Edition would be the best e-Reader on the market, but at that price you might as well get an iPad.

I think Sony should consider partnering with another major player to take on Nook and Kindle.
